Free Norwegian courses for Skilled Workers

Supported by IMDi – Taught by Alfaskolen
This free Norwegian course offers 80 hours of language training tailored to skilled workers who want to strengthen their communication skills in both everyday and professional settings. The training is designed specifically for those working in the following industries:
healthcare, sales and service, education, and tailoring and textile.
In collaboration with the Norwegian Directorate for Integration and Diversity (IMDi), Alfaskolen can offer a limited number of students 80 hours of free Norwegian language training for levels B1-B2.
Starting from aprilCourse rounds
This is the spring round of the course, starting April 23, 2025, and ending June 18, 2025.
There will be additional rounds in the summer and autumn – information about those will be posted later.
Course description
The course consists of 80 lesson hours and three parts:
- Part 1 and Part 2 run simultaneously over the first 8 weeks
- Part 3 follows during the final 4 weeks
Together, these make up a complete 12-week course.
Part 1: General Norwegian Training at level B1 (48 hours)
This B1-level course provides participants with structured and flexible language training, either as a solid introduction to the level or as a targeted review — depending on your starting point. The course focuses on key skills in reading, listening, writing, speaking, and digital competencies.
Part 2: Industry-Specific Conversation Course (24 hours)
In parallel with your general language training, you will join a conversation course tailored to your profession. You will choose one of the following focus areas:

These lessons will help you use Norwegian confidently in real work-related situations, whether you interact with clients, patients, students, or team members.
Part 3: Participation in Activities (8 hours)
After the course modules are completed, you will participate in additional language activities such as online language cafés or summer excursions. These sessions help you use Norwegian in more informal, real-life situations. Activities take place one Friday per week over four weeks.
Choose Your Course Format
This free Norwegian course for skilled workers is offered in two different formats, allowing participants to choose the option that best fits their schedule and learning preferences: a hybrid course (with both classroom and online sessions), or a fully online course.
Option 1: Hybrid (classroom + online)

- B1 lessons: Mondays & Wednesdays at Alfaskolen (Kongens gate 15, Oslo)
- Choose either 09:00–11:15 or 17:00–19:15 (classroom sessions)
- Choose either 09:00–11:15 or 17:00–19:15 (classroom sessions)
- Industry-specific conversation course: Fridays (online)
- Time will be announced before registration
- Activities: One Friday per week (online or in Oslo), over four weeks
- Course materials: Requires Stein på stein textbook and workbook (NOK 1088)
Option 2: Online

- B1 lessons: Mondays & Wednesdays , 18:00 – 20:15 (online per zoom)
- Industry-specific conversation course: Fridays (online)
- Time will be announced before registration
- Activities: One Friday per week (online or in Oslo), over four weeks
- Course materials: Digital resources are included free of charge
Who is qualified?
This offer has limited capacity. Because of this, there are certain requirements you must meet in order to be eligible:
- You have completed level A2 and pass the placement test (all students will need to take a placement test)
- You are living in Norway and want to improve your Norwegian.
- You are not currently participating in free Norwegian training sponsored by the Norwegian government (Introduction program, etc.).
NB! You cannot participate in several free courses on behalf of IMDi with other private providers at the same time.
How do I apply?
- Fill out the qualification form to see if you are eligible for the course.
– OBS: In the case that we get many registrations, the form may be closed as early as 01.04.2025. - Wait for an invitation to take a placement test at Alfaskolen or online. – Placement tests are mandatory before starting a free course!
- Courses will be offered at daytime and evening, classroom-based (at Kongens gate 15) and online (per zoom).
